The great ocean road

30 September, 2008

Before i forget, and don’t add on to the mammoth essay i wrote in the last blog (sorry again for that..), i did venture out of melbourne on one of my last days, on a trip i was told just could not be missed – the great ocean road. My luck as far as australian day trips has not gone well so far in this regard, because i could not have picked a worse day to look out onto what should have been breathtaking scenery, beaches and blue skies.. it rained virtually the whole day, from 7am departure until returning at 8:30pm.. and i dont think i have had to battle so hard through fierce winds to get a photo!

despite all that, you dont see the extremity of the weather in the pictures nearly as much, and while i was looking out onto the ocean and watching the rain lash around the minivan, i had to remind myself that in only a week or so from that time i would be in alice springs, the middle of the desert (and nowhere) and most likely thirsting for the sight of any rain on the horizon!

so.. we saw all the sights, from the lighthouse feartured in ’round the twist’, that wacky tv show which was popular in britain, to gorges, the famous 12 apostles (of which only 9 are left standing due to natural erosion) and last of all london bridge (which is no longer a bridge). the story we were told about london bridge was that only a few years ago, the bridge collapsed leaving a couple stranded on a pillar on the other side (luckily not while they were on the bridge itself). there was a big media frenzy over this event, with helicopters and tv crews all over the place capturing the moment (while im assuming the rescue helicopter was on its way), but it seemed the guy was particularly concerned with hiding his face as much as he could from the camera’s. It turns out that he was, as far as his wife knew, away on a business trip that weekend, but was literally caught red-handed (with thousands watching) with his new girlfriend on a romantic getaway!
